Bill George takes a break from building a fishing stand to look out at the Columbia River Gorge that filled with smoke from the Eagle Creek and Archer Mountain fires, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017.  George is from Yakima, but comes to the Columbia River often to fish for salmon.  He worries that many of the fish will die because the ash and fire heat up the river.

Elva Simmons moved into Hurst & Son-owned Sun Tides Community just outside Yakima after living in her car and a tent for several weeks. Since moving in almost a year ago, she has dealt with e. Coli contaminated water and rent increases. Simmons has taken on a lead role, organizing neighbors and residents of other Hurst & Sons parks in Yakima as they compare notes on the company.
